Next, in James’ Life.

October 7th, 2006

James is currently writing a post about his new camera, a new Canon IXUS 65. Its a little pocket rocket and he seems to love it so you should go and post about it on his blog if you are so inclined.
In other words im back from Bright’s IGA, and we had dodgy parma’s and wedges for dinner…

Im currently drinking a bottle of wine that was fairly cheap, so cheap in fact that it has no vintage on the label!

The Chicken and the egg

Chicken and egg debate unscrambled:
How interesting. its always puzzled me.

Found out this interesting fact last night.

May 28th, 2006

No-one believes me when I tell them this, but Crown Lager and Fosters Lager are the SAME BEER!!! I find this amusing because no self respecting Aussie would be caught dead drinking a can of Fosters, but they will glady pay twice the price for a bottle of Crown. Crown Lager is simply a good batch of Fosters, (with respect to its specifications – colour, bitterness etc), that has been double filtered.

I challenge anyone to tell the difference between the two beers.

For example, there are no artificial colorings in any beer made by Carlton and United Breweries or the Fosters Brewing Group – they use caramel to adjust the color to the correct specification. Yes, they do use artificial hop extract, but it is only used to bring the batch of beer up to the correct bitterness specification. They actually use “Pride of Ringwood” hops in most of their brews. There is no “artificially” carbonated water used at all – yeast produces more than enough CO2.

Interesting.

Allume Pisses me off

May 22nd, 2006

Just now Chris reminded me just how much this company and their website both suck. I was looking for a link to a copy of stuffit expander the only bulk package from the company for the mac platform. It ended up taking me a good 10mins looking for it until i finally found it on my hard-drive here at home.

So for future reference here is the link to the lite expander version:
Stuffit Expander 10

I will also mirror it here for future reference, just incase the link changes.

The adventures of sticky CD Man.

February 9th, 2006

Recently my Apple iBook G4’s CD Drive has been creating a sticky mess on the bottom of any CD that i care to insert into the drive. So last weekend, determined to get to the bottom if the problem proceeded to pull apart my ibook and to fix the CD-Rom Drive.

In order to do this one must remove a whole list of parts just to be able to get to the drive in order to remove it. In no particular order:

  • Battery
  • Keyboard and RAM Shield
  • Airport Extreme Card
  • Memory Card
  • Bottom Case
  • Bottom Shield
  • DC-In Board
  • Top case
  • Top Shield

(Go here for more info on pulling apart all sorts of Apple gear. Service Manual’s )

The results of doing this are as shown in this photo.
Dscf0391

Next came removing the CD-Rom drive from the Metal frame.

Dscf0388

And finally opening up the drive to work out the problem and correct it if at all possible.

Dscf0387

Turns out that it was a sticky felt pad (on the left in this photo) that had some-how managed to work itself loose from the bottom of the drive and invert itself, placing the sticky side towards and disk that was inserted.

After all that ithen had to re-asemble the drive and put the entire machine back together again! All up it took about 3 hours, however i have a working cd-drive again which is a good thing.

till next time,
Richie.

PSP KnockOFF

January 29th, 2006

I came across this funny psp rip the other day up in the Queen Vic Markets here in Melbourne, Australia.

Psp Rip

Its so funny, what these guys over in China / Taiwan try to do in-order to sell there products to consumers. However you would have to be rather stupid to buy one in the first-place, if you ask me.

If only you could get a real PSP for $12AU.

A couple of cool Mac shortcuts.

January 24th, 2006

Just now, while looking for the shortcut to force shutdown of my mac i stumbled across a couple of cool shortcuts for Apple’s Mac OS X.

firstly while your CMD( / apple / win) + Tab’bing through open applications if you hit “q” the currently selected application will be quit. this in the long run becomes a great way to close multiple applications in quick succession.

The other shortcut involves cycling though windows in an app with more than one window open. You can achieve this by pressing CMD( / apple / win) + the “`” (back tick / ~) key located just above the tab key.

Im putting these here so as to not forget them in the future, and it also means that the all you other users out there can also benefit from these shortcuts.

To shutdown gracefully the command is command-option-control-eject , however i still haven’t found the force shutdown command. If you know it, leave a comment.

Windows Media Components for QuickTime

January 13th, 2006

Now heres some good news for us mac people, Windows Media® Components for QuickTime is now available from Microsoft for free.

This plugin allows you to watch wmv files in Quicktime, which until now was only available by purchasing a plugin from a small company called flip4mac. Microsoft seem to have taken the plugin from flip4mac and are now distributing it for free from there website.

Good news for all i guess.

MacWorld 2006 Keynote New Hardware

January 11th, 2006

You should have a look at the two new pieces of Apple kit.

the MacBook Pro
and the Intel iMac.

Both contain dual core (”Intel Core Duo”) processors and will be available in the next month or so, sooner for the iMac i believe.

I might just have to treat myself to a new MacBook Pro!

A new phone and a new plan.

January 5th, 2006

Yes its true, im no longer a Vodafone customer, they have been good to me over the years however i felt like it was time for a change.

So today i switched to one of Three’s new offerings, a $29 a month capped plan that allows me to use around 100mins of talk time to any landline or mobile in australia (or overseas) + another 70mins to any other Three subscribers. Quite good value if you ask me.

Anyway the best bit is that along with the new plan i received a new phone, capable of accessing “Three’s” 3g Network content and making and receiving video calls.

Se-K608I-1

So i am now the proud owner of a new Sony Ericsson K608i. see photo.

PS: Dont worry my mobile number is still the same, i ported it over from Vodafone, which only took 3 bloody hours. ( Sure it might not seem all that long for what they must actually have to do to get it to work behind the scenes, however when the woman in the store says it would be 20 minutes maximum it would be nice it it was true.

anyway, goodnight for now.
-Richard.

Happy New Year – Welcome 2006

January 1st, 2006

Well it is once again a new year! Hopefully this one will be super duper fabulous for everyone. If all goes to plan we had a cocktail night at Pant’s last night, with all sorts of tasty alcoholic beverages.

New years resolution: (Haha), get window tinting for my car, and maybe loose a few kilo’s. All good for me.

Hope you all had fun down at Triangle festival on Philip Island, those of you who went, what a great way to see the new year into existence.

Did you see the fireworks? there were quite good this year, although not quit the same as back in 2000.

Up to Bright we go again.

December 28th, 2005

By the time this appears on the blog, we (Chris, Pant and myself) will be on our way upto Bright for a few days of R&R.

Should be good me thinks….. Its also going to be a big test of the TomTom (GPS navigation) system that Pant got for himself in November after always finding himself getting lost :) (Not really, but it does sound better that way.)

So were leaving Wed 28th December, and will be back some time friday arvo/evening. I will be sure to post some photo’s once i get back, from the new camera of course..

Till laterz, Richie

New Site Index page.

December 27th, 2005

Some of the more astute readers may have noticed that the index page found at http://phoenixonline.co.uk/ has in the last week or two been changed to a simpler, less confusing and more visually appealing listing of the contents of this site of mine.

New Index

The photo was taken by myself some time in November, after an evening exam while i was waiting to get a train home. I really like the way the blue and the black work together to give a fast moving image a good bit of life. the photo is in no way boring.

Merry Christmas

December 26th, 2005

Christmas this year has been good. Not to busy and quite relaxing, the weather has been nice as well (for the most part anyway).

I ended up getting a few bits and pieces for Christmas:

  • A new queen-size duvet
  • Plenty of shirts (always welcome)
  • Shoes
  • A Keg of Beer
  • Some cash
  • Vouchers (thanks Pant)
  • A few other pieces of Clothing
  • And so much food its not funny (Chocolate especially)

Christmas day was spent at home with Marilyn, David, Andrea, the Family and All 3 of my remaining grandparents which was quite alright. The amount of food we had was however insane, Turkey’s, Potato’s, Salads, veggies, Christmas Pudding, Cheesecake. The whole works.

Till next time.

-Richie
