Mac OS X Tiger Will be Sick.

Tuesday, June 29th, 2004

Last night Apple, in the keynote of the WWDC 2004 previewed the next version of Mac OS X “Tiger”.

Mac OSX Tiger CD Image.

To say the least it is going to be a killer of a release. The features that were previewed in Steve Job’s Keynote last night will do wonders to productivity for everyone everywhere.

Some of the new revolutionary features include:

Realtime meta-data searching built in. Allowing you to search every file on your hard disk in under 1/2 a second. much the same as is currently in itunes. This has ben dubbed “Spotlight” by Apple Inc. and is going to be so fucken sweet its not funny.

Another cool utility is going to be “Automate”, which is an application workflow creation suite. allowing you to automate tasks that would have taken heaps of repetition into one simple reusable workflow. Just give it the starting file and each step will be carried out on each file in turn.

to get the full Picture check out the Web Stream using Quicktime. Its kinda long but you can jump around in the stream using the progress bar to get to the more interesting bit’s if you must.

now to just go and find the developer preview on bittorent somewhere.

All Calm after the Storm.

Went up to the city today basically to pick up a new wireless card for my ibook. I had held out until now because apple’s asking price for the unit was until now AU$199 which i felt was just slightly too much for what essentially a mini-pci 802.11g card.

After Apple’s WWDC yesterday they re-bumped some prices on there online store both here and in the US. Basically the card that I had been hanging out for was reduced in price down to AU$129. I picked one up from the Apple Store (NextByte on Elisabeth st.) after only a slight bit of arguing. (My demands were the first thing they had heard of the card’s price bump.)

Basicly saying that Apple Australia’s web site was the definitive guide and seeing as they had the new price listed on the online store they were obliged to sell it to me for the new price.

After consulting with there manager they were happy to give it to me for the new price, which i would assume was adding up as a loss in there books. They probably paid more than $AU129 for the card wholesale from Apple Australia (The Importer).

Catch u all later.

How great are Holidays!

Sunday, June 27th, 2004

Friday night saw me play host to one Mr Daniel K. a late night of TV. Namely Wimbledon and “The Bridge at Remagen”.

Saturday afternoon saw Eddie come over to show off the New Sound system that had just been installed in the car (Pioneer I believe) as well as grab some more software for his new PowirBook.

While he was here i convinced him to give me a lift to the station. (Frankston) so that i could go and do some business up in melbourne before meeting up with some people for a night out on the town.

We ended up eating at some dodgy Chinese restraunt down a side alley of chinatown, where the food had so much msg. that sauces on the dishes were like slime. It dod however have in its favor the fact that you could get VB Stubbies for $AU2.50 each.

From there we moved on to the Cherry Tree lane Pub, then onto Matrix, before settling down for the night @ the Lounge.

The Journey back from Melb was interesting to say the least. It was the last train back on the Frankston line and it certainly showed! From massive arguments over the smallest of things to people drunk of there face’s trying to smash windows with there bare fist’s. Enough to say it was an interesting ride home.

Caught a taxi from frankston back home, sharing it with Bill, Liv and Ash, which surprisingly was not all that expensive.

To all of you going away for you holidays I hope you have a great time. (as do i for those who are not going away.)

Catch u all later, Richie.

End of Term 2…

Thursday, June 24th, 2004

aughhhhhhh…… Its the End of Term 2.. what a relief…. looking forewords for a bit of relaxing.

Eddie came over today with his brand spankers Centrino Lappy. very nice stuff. taking on the look of apple’s powerbook 15″ with the wide screen LCD panel and all.

Its slightly better than his last job, a Toshiba Satellite 1550 CDS model, or something like that.

Nice catching up with you mate. and thanks for the lift back from school this afternoon.

Not going to school tomorrow on account of my impeding Medical condition that prevents me from playing sport.

Hope to catch up with some people these holidays. should be good.

Thats all for now. Catch you all later.

Belking gear is Cool…

Monday, June 21st, 2004

Sunday saw me pop up to Southland’s Hardly Normal store to pick up my Belkin Wireless kit for $99AU. More info below.

The current idea is to locate the wireless router around the school in AP mode so that wireless access of the school lan may be a possibility. Chances are it will be up in the Drama Department or in the Library for most of the time.

Today was an almost normal day @ school today. Highlight of the day: Having a triple spare sessions 1B 2A and 2B due to a modified timetable.

WIth a bit of prodding from pant i finaly got round to validating the source of this blog so that it was valid XHTML. All good. Check the link down the botom of the page to verify this.

All for now. Catch You Later.

Your Looking @ one FilmStar!!!

Saturday, June 19th, 2004

Well not really. but anyway yesterday i spent my afternoon/evening down at Toorak College, filming part of Aim’s U3 Media Assignment. Its basically a 3.5 min long video clip such as you would see on rage or video-hits.

We were filming in the Drawing Room in what I believe is the “Hamilton” Building, opposite Reception, in what appears to be a room with 1920’s decor.

After a good night of filming, Most of us headed back to Aim’s place for pizza and a few drinks. we just had a good time relaxing, dancing and just talking.

Got home about 1am, and slept for quite a while. I feel sorry for those of you who had to work or play sport the next day, it would have been hell getting up early.

Thats all from me for now. Catch u all Later.

Struth… its over.

Just went out to dinner. to RockSalt in Mt Martha. it was OK, but at the same time not all that crash hot.

i think ill sleep well tonight.

Can you Say NUT?

Monday, June 14th, 2004

NUT is a UPS monitoring system for Unix/Linux distro’s. Its realy good once you have it all set up however getting it all working together takes some time.

I started out looking for a utility to allow my Smoothwall box to email me alerts when the power failed and allow it to shut down gracefully upon reaching the Low Battery signal from the UPS.

I ended up getting it all working yesterday after getting a remote shell with the gcc elf compiler on it from Tom.

Stay tuned on nut installer front as there will be some announcements later on. I have written an install script for smoothwall and IPCOP at the moment and will place the whole tar.gz file up there in a little while.

I had better go now, my English Oral is beckoning.

YOU GOTTA LOVE OEDIPUS AND BREAKER MORANT!!!!

It Arrived. Finally

Saturday, June 12th, 2004

Well the UPS arrived friday morning and after a unpacking it from its layers of protective cardboard and plastic i placed it on its vertical stand and proceeded to charge it overnight to ensure that the battery was at full capacity and there would me no measurable memory effect on the units battery.

The next morning i went about reorganizing my wiring closet to accommodate the new gadget. it all fits in quite nicely spread over two shelves.

THe next part was fun: it was the runtime trial where you purposely pull the plug and just keep on surfing the internet until it runs out of juice.

It lasted very well with a total run time of approx. 25mins with a headless P2 firewall, 2 switches, a NB1300 adsl modem and a Minitar 802.11b access point all running from the UPS.

Everything works just fine running from the modified square-wave generated by the units inverter apart from one of my switches, a Skymaster 10/100 8 port unit that does not like the switch over from Mains power to UPS battery and appears to freeze up.

Update: It appears that it was not the switch at fault but the Power-supply and t passing unclean dc on to the unit. after swapping over the power-supply the whole system works perfectly.

Now to just get the dry contact DB9 interface working under linux. getting it to email me upon the power failing.

UPS Still Not Here!!!!

Thursday, June 10th, 2004

Well I was expecting to have received my package by today, however it has not yet arrived, and I feel that there is not all that much hope of it arriving today, seeing as it it is already 5:30.

If anyone is interested the currier company is ipec and the item number is “8206867250″.

Vic is off seeing Harry Potter tonight so I am once again left to fend for myself in this jungle of a house we have here. (Yes Kinsey, That does include cooking my own dinner. )

I also have a Math’s Methods SAC tomorrow that will be god knows how hard and an English Oral next wednesday that I need to prepare for, So I will probably be having some fun tonight.

In other computing news my Special Edition “ice” Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse’s left click button packed in around tuesday, however I only found out it was a hardware issue after reinstalling OS X on my ibook. And seeing that it still had issues after a clean install.

Catch u all later.

PS: Sorry Tom.

Chemistry among other things….

Tuesday, June 8th, 2004

I sat my unit 3 chemistry exam today between 11:45 and 1:30. The exam itself went quite well, with titration’s not featuring on the paper, which was a bonus for me. The paper
I will however say was harder than any of the papers i did during my revision, probobly due to me having the benifit of reference material available if i did indeed get stuck.

In other news, I ordered a UPS for my Lan yesterday. which should arrive some time in the next few days. for those of you in the know it’s a 500VA/300W/3Amp unit, which should be enough to keep my assorted pieces of network gear up for at-least 25 minutes in the event of a local power failure.

UPS Picture.

I cant wait to test the setup out. Just pulling the plug and waiting for it to run out, all the while timing it to record how long it will last in the event of a real power outage.

New Netspace Plan’s!!!

Friday, June 4th, 2004

Netspace today updated my account to the new “512 MaXimiser Flat Rate” Plan.

I now have a huge 16GB/16GB a month to use up. Lots of downloading in the near future, once my Chemistry exam is out of the way!

New Feature’s…… Yay.

Thursday, June 3rd, 2004

1) There’s now a BlogRing in the sidebar thanks to James for setting that one up for us all to use!

2) I now have a random quote heading in the sidebar for your enjoyment! There all quite good…

————

In other news I went to the Unit 3 Toorak Ensemble performances tonight, all 3 groups were bloody spectacular! With my definite favorites being the Schizophrenic Father and the Square arm stomping identical members of society.

All three groups did the theme “The Outsider” justice, with all managing to produce enthralling and entertaining pieces that were thoroughly enjoyed by the audience.

Thats all for now, Catch You Later.
